Minden

A stroll through Minden, the Douglas County seat, will take you past 100-year-old homes with well-maintained gardens and tall trees. Minden Park is a good spot for lunch, with its well-kept grass, sidewalks and picnic tables. During the summer, families gather at the bandstand/gazebo for monthly concerts in the park. From almost any vantage point in Minden you can see majestic Job’s Peak, possibly the most photographed mountain in the Carson Range of the Sierra Nevada.

Not far from Lake Tahoe’s world-class skiing, beaches, gaming and nightlife, Minden can be your base for outdoor recreation. Hikers and horseback riders follow the Faye-Luther Canyon Trail that begins off State Route 206. Bikers race on Foothill and Jacks Valley roads. Four of the Divine Nine golf courses are minutes away. After a day of outdoor activity, you can relax at the Carson Valley Inn, have dinner at Barone and Reed in downtown or choose from a number of American, Asian, Mexican and Italian eateries.

Minden was an early planned community established by H.F. Dangberg Jr., the son of a German immigrant. Dangberg named the new town after a city near his father’s birthplace. Many of the town’s brick buildings were designed by noted Nevada architect, Frederick Delongchamps. Downtown you will find antique stores, gift shops and art galleries. You can pick up a walking tour brochure at the town office, located in the CVIC Hall, the site of events, weddings, concerts and theatrical performances.
